It might be my fight….but it is not my war!

I have been thinking a lot about the battle in the physical, but also in the spiritual. Let’s not forget about the constant battlefield of the mind. I have been studying Revelation 17 & 18 the past couple of weeks with my online Bible Study Fellowship group. Lots of questions about end-times, evil’s last ditch effort to win, and the confidence we have in the outcome.

My mind just keep circling in this thought of the battle. We are not by-standers. We are the fighters in the war. The war for the souls of man for eternity. And we often take up that call and mission and then go after it with everything we have! Ephesians 6 describes the armor of God that is provided for us in the battle, but how often do we mentally equip ourselves with His armor? How often do we run out into the fight frantically unprepared?

I think I often need the reminder that I am not the commander of the battle. I don’t have to come up with the winning battle strategy or set the battle plan or determine the fight location. I am not the one who decides the outcome of the smallest of wars or the final war. However, I do fight in the battle as a warrior for Jesus.

Part of the problem is that often I do want to decide the outcome, the timing, etc. The draw to potentially avoid pain and discomfort and the unknown. I am not all-knowing or all-powerful. My sight is very limited and often temporal. I am becoming more aware that faith is submission to the authority and sovereignty of God. Getting to the point where I can REST in His sovereignty and authority.

I will link two songs below that speak directly to my heart and soul every time I hear them in church. I am copying some of the lyrics below.

Battle Belongs” by Phil Wickham
When all I see is the battle, You see my victory
When all I see is the mountain, You see a mountain moved
And as I walk through the shadow, Your love surrounds me
There’s nothing to fear now for I am safe with You

So when I fight, I’ll fight on my knees
With my hands lifted high
Oh God, the battle belongs to You
And every fear I lay at Your feet
I’ll sing through the night
Oh God, the battle belongs to You

And if You are for me, who can be against me? Yeah
For Jesus, there’s nothing impossible for You
When all I see are the ashes, You see the beauty
Thank You, God
When all I see is a cross, God, You see the empty tomb

Almighty fortress, You go before us
Nothing can stand against the power of our God
You shine in the shadow, You win every battle
Nothing can stand against the power of our God

You’ve Already Won” by Shane & Shane
There’s peace that outlasts darkness
Hope that’s in the blood
There’s future grace that’s mine today
That Jesus Christ has won

So I can face tomorrow
For tomorrow’s in Your hands
All I need You will provide
Just like You always have

I’m fighting a battle
You’ve already won
No matter what comes my way
I will overcome
I don’t know what You’re doing
But I know what You’ve done
I’m fighting a battle
You’ve already won

There’s mercy in the waiting
Manna for today
And when it’s gone I know you’re not
You are my hope and stay
When the sea is raging
Your Spirit is my help
He’ll fix my eyes on Jesus Christ
And I’ll say that is well
Oh I know that it is well

I know how the story ends
We will be with You again
You’re my Savior my defense
No more fear in life or death
